SUPERFOOD AND ESSENTIAL CEREALS FOR NUTRITION

Ragi and other millets are the major crops grown by rural communities in the Mysuru district.

In fact ragi was the predominant food crop grown and consumed by the rural and tribal communities in this region. The nutritional value of ragi and other millets are scientifically proven.

But, today due to the variety of reasons, consumption of ragi and other millets are substantially reduced amongst this community.

The table shows the high nutritive value of millet as compared to the other grains such as wheat and rice. Millets are rich in minerals such as iron and calcium which helps to check the nutritional deficiency disorders such as anaemia, calcium deficiency, etc.

Millets are gluten free and boasts high protein, fiber and antioxidant contents. Besides this, millet contains soluble fiber, which produces a viscous substance in the gut. In turn, this traps fats and helps to reduce the cholesterol levels.
