Recent challenges in LED driving requirements created a demand for DC-DC converters with a high dynamicrange for their operating power levels, reduced voltage, current ripples, and high efficiency.The variable input voltage range, also present in automotive applications and high output voltage variations when switching between LED strings of different lengths or different types of LEDs, are constraints that make converter flexibility a mandatory feature. Other key aspects are reduced component count and low EMI.Considering the above requirements, the Cuk converter is a suitable choice for a constant current power supplyto power LED strings.The Cuk converter also offers capacitive isolation between input and output, as well as load protection in case any of the switching components fail, similar to SEPIC or ZETA converters.This topology offers buck-boost capability for situations where output voltage must switch below or above the input voltage (a typical situation occurs when the LED string length is decreased/increased).The following application note describes the implementation of two versions of a 20-30W DC-DC converter for LED driving, using MOSFET transistors and new-generation GaN transistors, paired with the MCP1633 low-side controller.The MCP1633 offers current PWM dimming capabilities, variable switching frequency, and the enable/disablefeature, if the converter is interfaced with a microcontroller.
