The NCL30488 [1] is a power factor corrected controllerwith primary side constant voltage (CV) and constantcurrent (CC) control suitable for flyback, buck−boost orSEPIC converters. The NCL30488 is housed in an SOIC 8package and targets high−performance LED drivers. Thesecontroller integrate a proprietary circuit for power factorcorrection and constant current control allowing to achievea power factor above 0.9 and total harmonic distortion below10% for universal mains input. This controller is normallyprimary side regulated, but the version (TBD) is compatiblewith secondary side regulation. In this version, the COMPpin features a pullup resistor to the internal reference voltagerail and allows directly connecting an optocoupler collectorto the pin. The current−mode, quasi−resonant architecture ofthis controller optimizes the efficiency by turning on theMOSFET when the drain−source voltage is minimal(valley). The valley lockout and frequency foldbackcircuitry maintain high−efficiency performance in in lightload during constant−voltage regulation.
