Characteristics

Along with SPI, I²C is one of the most widely used on-board interfaces for establishing communication between two integrated circuits. Hence the name "Inter-Integrated Circuit". With a maximum data rate of 5 Mbit/s, the serial bus is less suitable for exchanging large amounts of data, but more for controlling and querying controller peripherals.

The Single-ended transmission is highly susceptible to common mode interferences. To reduce susceptibility, "on board" should be taken literally. For communication between different PCBs we suggest differential interfaces like RS485 or isolated SPI.
