Protected DC-bus input power and control power supply reference design for low-voltage servo drives

Overview

TopologyBuck Converter
Input voltage48 V
Switching frequency1000 kHz
Output 115 V
IC revisionE1

Description

This reference design uses an ORing controller, the LM5050-1 to provide protection against reverse polarity and reverse current. In conjunction, the LM5069 hot swap controller is used for overcurrent, over voltage, under voltage protection, and inrush current limitation. The design also features power rails for the control electronics including the gate drive, encoder and MCU circuitry.

Features

  • Protect the DC bus voltage against – overvoltage, reverse polarity, overcurrent, and inrush current
  • Prevent reverse current flow back into the common DC bus supply during motor braking
  • Ability to withstand up to 100-V transients on the DC link (48 V nominal)
  • Option to power the MCU using the USB for configuration in absence of DC bus input
  • Protect the encoder supplies (both from the DC bus and external back up battery) against short-circuit fault

Typical applications

  • Appliances, power and garden tools
  • Motor drives, drones, telecom
  • High-cell-count battery packs (E-Bike, E-Scooter)
