Due to self heating during operation, maximum operating power (I² * R) must be reduced at high ambient temperature according to this derating curve. Tough environments need reliable components

Chip resistors exposed to a sulfur-containing atmosphere will fail due to sulfurization of the internal electrodes after some time. This is solved by adding a NiCr alloy barrier layer to protect the internal electrodes.

This type of failure occurs in both the thick-film and thin-film type. Over time the sulfur penetrates through the gap at the edges of the overcoat resin. Thus, resulting in a chemical reaction between the topside electrode and the sulfur. The corrosion of this electrode results in an increasing resistance value. This mechanism can even lead to a complete failure of the resistor and thus to an open circuit. Therefore, an anti sulfur layer is applied to protect the topside electrode. This anti sulfur layer prevents the penetration of the sulfur containing medium and thus the sulfurization process.

How does Current Sensing of the Application work?

  • Using a resistor within the circuit of the application to make the current measurable (called: shunt)
  • The current through such a resistor generates a proportional voltage drop according                                          to Ohm’s Law: Imeas = VRshunt / Rshunt
  • Very low resistance values are used to generate a low voltage drop up to a few hundred mV
  • In case of low currents, very precise resistance values and an amplifying circuit have to be used to get stable measurements, because of the very small voltage drop

Answer:Yes , They can be used as normal general purpose thick-film resistors. Their special properties make them a particularly durable solution.


Answer:General purpose SMD thick-film resistors typically have electrodes that contain silver. On contact with silver, this silver reacts to form sulfur sulfide, which is a very poor conductor. This greatly increases the resistance value, which can ultimately lead to failure. With normal thick-film resistors, there is a small gap through which contact can occur between the silver and sulfur-containing environments.


Answer: There are 3-digit or 4-digit markings on some large-size SMD resistors:

3-digit marking:
WRIS-RSKS0603 (all), WRIS-RSKS0805 (±5%), WRIS-RSKS1206 (±5%), WRIS-RSKS1210 (±5%)
Each resistor is marked with a three-digit code on the protective coating to designate the nominal resistance value according to the IEC standard E24.

4-digit marking:
RSKS0805 (±1%), RSKS1206 (±1%), RSKS1210 (±1%)
Each resistor is marked with a four-digit code on the protective coating to designate the nominal resistance value.

The rated resistance is indicated with 4 characters, consisting of either four digits or three digits and one letter.

  • 10R0 -> 10 Ω
  • 22R0 -> 22Ω  
  • 1001  -> 1KΩ
