Full Steam Ahead with Würth Elektronik ICS Controllers

Würth Elektronik ICS has recently supported a solar boat project run by Delft University of Technology (in the Netherlands).

The boat was developed by a 16-strong team of students and was built by hand. Almost 3000 Li-ion solar cells are fitted on the boat, which is made from carbon fiber and aramid and measures 20 feet in length and 6.5 feet in width. These cells produce an energy output of 1740 watts, which enables the boat to propel its light weight of just 297 pounds to a top speed of 18 mph.

The acceleration is controlled by an ICCS CAN Controller 64P, which Würth Elektronik ICS provided as part of its sponsorship. Last summer, the university’s Delta Lloyd Solar Team took part in the five-day DONG Energy Solar Challenge, which covers over 135 miles, and finished in the very respectable position of fifth place.
