Spirit of optimism for a wireless future

Host Würth Elektronik eiSos satisfied with the Wireless Power Tradeshow
and Seminar

The congress of the Wireless Power Con¬sor¬tium in Munich that ended on 25 August is being celebrated as a major success by the host, Würth Elektronik eiSos. The reason: among the 77 compa¬nies who participated were many great names from the industrial, automotive, and medical technology sectors, and the visitors, roughly 150 in number, engaged in an enthusiastic exchange of ideas in the various seminars.

In his keynote speech, Würth Elektronik eiSos CTO Alexander Gerfer went into the reasons why the wireless transmission of energy has not yet made the eagerly anticipated breakthrough. He urged the audience to devote attention to applications beyond the field of smartphone charging stations, which are still suffering from the “chicken or the egg” conundrum. The many visitors from areas beyond the consumer electronics sector were an indication that the first steps are alrea¬dy being taken along this path. WPC Chairman Menno Treffers again emphasized the great potential still waiting to be tapped, praising the engagement of Würth Elektronik eiSos in the industrial and medical technology sectors. He specifically mentioned the 15W design kit that Würth Elektronik eiSos has developed in cooperation with ROHM Semiconductor which will be launched in October. Not only the aspect of standardization is important, he said, but safety considerations must also be given a greater emphasis. Treffers and Gerfer advocated a massive campaign to promote the “tangible” successes of the Qi standard.

The overall impression was that the event took place in a congenial and openminded atmosphere, and the excellent attendance of the supporting exhibition gave good reason to hope that many exciting cooperation projects will follow.
