Why an input filter is essential for switching regulators
Switching regulators inherently generate conducted EMI on their supply lines due to the pulsating currents in the input path—regardless of topology or application. Although Würth Elektronik MagI³C Power Modules are optimized for exceptionally low conducted and radiated emissions and typically do not require an additional output filter, the input current of a buck converter can still introduce unwanted interference.

Whether an input filter is necessary directly in front of the power module depends on the specific application. This Application Note explains the origin of differential‑mode noise, provides a structured approach to designing effective LC and π-input filters, and outlines the relevant measurement and EMC validation methods. The goal is to give developers clear guidance for achieving EMC compliance efficiently and reliably.
