Coupled Inductors Series Overview

This post will explain which coupled inductor families are available from Wurth Electronics Midcom.

SMD Shielded Coupled Inductor: WE-DD

Wurth Electronics Midcom’s WE-DD series is one of the industry’s most-used coupled inductor families. The great advantage of this family is its flexibility in size.

The WE-DD series offers two standard footprints: 7x7 mm and 12x12 mm, each with different heights to find the right part by taking maximum heights, maximum currents, or targeted DCR resistances in measurement. The WE-DD series is available with both a crossed and a straight pin layout.

Wurth Electronics Midcom’s WE-DD series has maximum current handling capabilities of 8.6 A DC current and up to 18 A in saturation current. Applications for the WE-DDs include the following:

  • SEPIC and CUK topologies
  • Non-isolated flyback applications
  • 1:1 transformers
  • Switching regulators with a second, unregulated output voltage

SMD Shielded Low Profile Coupled Inductor: WE-TDC

In addition to the WE-DD, Wurth Electronics Midcom offers a new generation of low-profile coupled inductors: the WE-TDC series. This series is meant for applications in which board space or height is restricted.

Key features of the WE-TDC series include:

  • Low self losses
  • Low leakage inductance
  • High mechanical stability on PCB (due to the four large landing pads)

The WE-TDC has current handling capabilities of 4.5 A DC current and up to 14 A in saturation current. Applications for the WE-TDC are:

  • SEPIC, CUK, and ZETA converters
  • Non-isolated flyback converters
  • Buck/boost converters
  • Switching regulators with a second, unregulated output voltage

SMD Toroidal Double Power Choke: WE-DCT

The WE-DCT series from Wurth Electronics Midcom is for larger-current SEPIC applications and is often used as a 1:1 transformer.

The very low RDC and core losses go back to the specially trimmed WE-PERM core material, which has proven its outstanding performance in other high-current inductor families of Wurth Electronics Midcom. Due to the WE-PERM material, the WE-DCT has a very stable (soft) saturation behavior, which guarantees--even at maximum conditions--a great performance.

The WE-DCT has current handling capabilities of 14. A DC currents and up to 120 A in saturation current. Applications for the WE-DCT include:

  • SEPIC and CUK converters
  • 1:1 non-isolated flyback converters
  • Buck/boost converters
  • High-power switching regulators
  • Solar inverters
