Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler scores valuable points in Marrakesh

The German team aims to catch up with the rest of the pack ahead of the European rounds.

It was a fight to finish in the fifth round of the FIA Formula E championship in Marrakesh last Saturday where despite the stiff competition, the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team managed to gain some valuable points.

Lucas di Grassi was third-fastest in the first qualifying group on Saturday morning where he was later allocated to 13th position on the starting grid. The Brazilian showcased good pace in his Audi e-tron, climbing up the order to finish in seventh place, gaining the German team some much-needed points.

The score also seals Di Grassi’s fifth place position in the driver’s championship.“Thank you to the entire team, my car was really good in the race,” said di Grassi. “More is not possible at the moment with our package from such a starting position. The competition in Formula E is too strong for that.”

Di Grassi’s teammate Daniel Abt battled with unpredictable car balance problems during free practice and qualifying where the complete end of his Audi e-tron had to be replaced before the race start. Abt was placed in 18th position on the starting grid and fought his way up to 14th place. “Nevertheless, it was an extremely frustrating race,” said Abt. “We simply did not have pace here.”

In about one month’s time, the championship will be setting its sights on the European rounds. Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler Team Principal is looking to catch up with the rest of the competition by then, “It’s obvious that we have some work to do,” said McNish. “Fortunately, we have some time until the next race to think about how we can improve. Daniel already had problems in qualifying. At least we scored some points with Lucas and defended 5th place in the drivers’ championship.”

The sixth round of the FIA Formula E Championship is set to take place in Rome on April 4th.
