We are already going into the third round with the digital days! This time with a special feature, with the focus on the EMC area. Following the motto: EMC Road to Market: Fast and easy we take you to the 4 areas related to the stages of EMC Solutions.

10 AM: Influence of PCB layout and passive components on the EMI signature of a DCDC converter

Often the success of an EMC test is closely related to the DCDC power supply on boards. This seminar will show the influence of different PCB designs as well as the passive components on the EMC signature using a real measured DCDC converter. In addition, suitable filter strategies will be presented in order to comply with the limits of CISPR32 Class B from 150kHz to 1GHz.

The control of EMI in electronic devices is an increasing issue faced by designers in order to ensure that devices comply with EMC requirements. The EMC testing process can reveal that the shielding of a certain area of a PCB or cable is needed or may even detect an unexpected EMI source. This presentation is focused on showing experimentally through some demos how it is possible to reduce EMI problems with external solutions without redesigning the electronics. These solutions are represented by magnetic shielding sheets and cable ferrites.

Tuesday, 267th October 2021 - EMC Design

9 AM: Signal interface filters effectivenes under real conditions

Speaker: Dr. Heinz Zenkner | Duration: ca. 90 min incl. Q&A

Problems that arise when implementing an RF filter in modern signal interfaces are discussed. Effectiveness of filters under realistic impedance conditions, via peripheral cables in comparison to the 50W-system are shown. Filter topologies are compared, the influence of filter design and peripheral cable impedance are explained. Filter topology adapted to the system, suitable components and an RF-compatible construction including layout are discussed. Critical points such as signal bandwidth, reference ground, coupling possibilities, filter construction and PCB layout are considered.

2 PM: How to Make Your Product Fail EMC Tests: Common Shielding Design Mistakes and Their Solutions

In this presentation Lee will discuss and demonstrate some of the most common shielding problems that he and his business partner Randal Vaughn have seen over their 30+ years of providing hands-on EMC troubleshooting and design reviews services. As Lee discusses these problems and their solutions, he will discuss the principles that underlie good design and also how these principles are often misunderstood. Lee’s university and professional EMC courses always feature entertaining hardware demos to help the audience visualize electromagnetic concepts and eliminate the “black magic” of EMC.

10. 30 AM: UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) Mark – EMC in UK after Brexit

Presentation to explain the details of the UKCA mark that will become applicable to products placed in the GB market as a replacement to CE marking since Brexit.  Understanding how to still gain access to the GB market using this mark and well as similarities with the current CE marking that people are familiar with.

2 PM: System Efficient ESD Design for Robust Electronic Systems

Speakers: Bernd Deutschmann full Professor of Electronics and Head of the Institute of Electronics at the Graz University of Technology/Austria & David Pommerenke professor in the Institute of Electronics | Duration: ca. 90 min incl. Q&A

System Efficient ESD Design (SEED) address the protection of I/O against ESD using simulation. This allows to predict the robustness against damaging ESD and allows to reduce the likelihood of disturbances caused by ESD (soft-failure).

Reduced design margin due to smaller, less current carrying metallization and contacts and thinner gate oxide has reduced the design window for ESD protection to a few V and currents of less than 2 A for high speed I/O such as USB 4.x. This, and the need to use low capacitance devices (< 0.2 pF) inhibits a design by data sheet.

In simulation based design models for the TVS, which include the transient turn-on and models for the IO of the IC are combined with all passive interconnect to create a model that predicts currents and voltage at the IC for different rise time and amplitude ESD pulses.

9 AM: Do you know your component? Field behavior of different passive components

Speaker: Frank Puhane & Joanne Wu | Duration: ca. 60 min incl. Q&A

In theory, it looks quite simple how to choose the right passive components. Therefore, various literature, calculations and description are available. The dataset of the IC manufacture guides you through the process of finding the right components for the application, too. After finding the components, you will see the needed values and specification inside the datasheet of the different vendors and you can compare them. Nevertheless, are they comparable? Maybe you observe the following situation too. Everything went well at first sight, but when the application is tested at the edges, there is some unforeseen behavior. We are working with non-ideal components and there are more things to consider when using the passive components under real operation conditions. We will explain this behavior; show you these effects and will explain why they are present.

Alexander Gerfer

Alexander Gerfer is CEO and CTO of one of Europe's largest manufacturers of electronic and electromechanical components with around 8,300 employees, based in Waldenburg, Munich, Berlin and Barcelona, and with R&D locations in Silicon Valley, Dallas and Shenzhen. The graduate electrical engineer learned his business from scratch as a radio and television technician.

As man of the first hour he set up the product development as well as the quality management. The passion of the author of specialist books is to communicate complex content understandably. As a sought-after key note speaker, lecturer and promoter of innovative hardware startups he is travels internationally.

Andreas Nadler

Andreas Nadler has worked as a hardware developer in the fields of power supplies, EMC and sensors for seven years.

He has been holding a position as Field Application Engineer at Würth Elektronik eiSos since 2015.

Arturo Mediano

Prof. Arturo Mediano is the founder of The HF-Magic Lab®, a specialized laboratory for design, diagnostic, troubleshooting, and training in the EMI/EMC, Signal Integrity, and RF fields. He received his M.Sc. (1990) and his Ph. D. (1997) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Zaragoza (Spain), where he has held a teaching professorship in EMI/EMC/RF/SI since 1992. For more than 30 years Arturo has been involved in R&D projects with many companies in the EMI/EMC, Signal Integrity and RF fields for communications, industry, medical, and scientific applications. He regularly shares his knowledge and expertise with students and engineers in teaching courses and seminars worldwide.

Dr.-Ing. Heinz Zenkner

Dr.-Ing. Heinz Zenkner works at Würth Elektronik in the areas of technical marketing and application engineering and as a lecturer in the area of EMC at the Würth technical academy. Previously, he was technical director and head of hardware and technology development at various companies. Mr Zenkner has also worked as a lecturer at various universities, at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce and at numerous seminars. Mr Zenkner is an officially appointed and sworn expert for EMC.

Lee Hill

Lee Hill has over 30 years of experience providing hands-on hardware troubleshooting and design reviews to solve and prevent elusive regulatory and functional electrical noise problems. He is Founding Partner of SILENT Solutions LLC and GmbH, an electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and RF design, troubleshooting, and training firm established in 1992. Lee teaches EMC worldwide and is a member of adjunct faculty at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and an EMC instructor at University of Oxford (England), He earned his MSEE in electromagnetics from the Missouri University of Science and Technology EMC Laboratory, where he studied under Dr.’s Tom Van Doren, Todd Hubing, and James Drewniak. Lee is the named inventor of three US patents for EMI control in electronic systems, and provides expert witness services for patent litigation.

Adrian Stirn

Adrian Stirn, born 1991, studied electrical engineering at the university of applied science Heilbronn in Künzelsau. After the Bachelor degree he started to set up the EMC-Laboratory at the eiSos Headquarters in Waldenburg. Adrian is supporting customers in precompliance emc tests and emc debugging.

Victor Martinez

Victor Martinez, born 1996, studied bachelor in telecommunication engineering at the University of Valencia. After the Bachelor degree he started to work as Product Manager in the EMC Shielding & Thermal Solution Team.

Glen Wallis

Glen Wallis, started as an apprentice at EMC UK laboratory and working his way up to Senior EMC Test Engineer over a 14 year period. Joined Wurth Electronics in 2007 as a Regional Business Manager and progressed to being the Field Application Engineer for the UK + IE accumulating over 10 years’ experience servicing customers with our products as well as solution providing in the area of EMC. He is now Technical Director with Wurth Electronics UK Ltd and responsible for the day to day management of the UK + IE Field Application Engineer team.

Bernd Deutschmann

Bernd Deutschmann is Full Professor of Electronics and Head of the Institute of Electronics at the Graz University of Technology/Austria. He received his M.Sc. degree and Ph.D. degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Graz University of Technology /Austria in 1999 and 2002, respectively. His research area is the design of electronic systems and integrated circuits with special emphasis on their electromagnetic compatibility.

David Pommerenke

David Pommerenke is professor in the Institute of Electronics. He joined the Institute after being professor at the EMC laboratory in Rolla, MO for 19 years. His research interest are electrostatic discharge, EMC, measurement and instrumentation and robust electronic design.

Frank Puhane

After studying electrical engineering with specialization in communications technology in cooperation with a semiconductor company, Frank Puhane worked for three years as a development engineer for customer-specific controls for a medium-sized company. He joined Würth Elektronik eiSos as a Field Application Engineer and worked in this area for more than three years. Afterwards he changed internal to the Capacitors & Resistors Division. Actual he is the Leader of the Technical Engineering and is available for our customers as a technical contact for all questions concerning the world of capacitors and resistors at Würth Elektronik eiSos.

Dr.-Ing. Heinz Zenkner

Joanne Wu is a Product Manager at Würth Elektronik eiSos, responsible for products in the area of EMC components, Ferrites for PCB assembly since 2018. She graduated from the Technical University of Munich with a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. Since then she has been working on developing new measurements.

FAQ

How can I register for the "WE meet @ EMC digital days" event?

You have to register individually for each presentation slot. You can do this very quickly by clicking on "Registration" at the top of the agenda for each presentation and completing the registration. On the day of the presentation you only have to login with the link from the confirmation e-mail.

Is there a fee for participation/registration?

The complete event is free of charge.

When and for how long can I register?

Registration is open now and it is also possible to register at short notice on the days of the event.

In which language are the presentations?

The presentations will be in English.

How long does a presentation slot take?

The presentation workshops last 35-90 minutes. After the presentation there will be time for a short Q+A.

What are the technical requirements to participate in the digital days?

The digital days are held using the GoToWebinar tool. All you need to use the tool is a PC or laptop with an integrated current browser version (preferably Google Chrome) and integrated speakers or headphones.

Can I watch the presentations afterwards?

All presentations will be made available as recordings on this website.
