Basic Concepts of Electromagnetic Waves

Now that we have a basic definition of shields, we can cover some basic concepts about EM waves that will help describe the performance of shields.

What is an electromagnetic wave, and how does it play a role in EMI? Radiated electric energy propagates through space as a wave, and it may cause interference with electronic devices. The key parameters to describing a wave are its power, amplitude, wavelength, and frequency.

These four parameters are very important in understanding which shields will work better with certain parts of noise propagation.

In addition to that, electromagnetic waves have two components to them. One is the electric field and the other is the magnetic field. As you can see in the photo, they travel in unison.

These two components of the electromagnetic wave travel together orthogonally to each other. If you picture a clock, it is like one of the components, for example, the electric field is at the 12:00 p.m. hour and magenetic field is at the 9:00 p.m. hour.
