LEDs: Always Innovating. Ensuring Quality.

Whether you realize it or not, LEDs play a large role in your life. They come in a variety of colors and sizes. Chances are if your electronic has an indicator light, that light is an LED.

LED uses include, but are not limited to:

• Office Automation

• Signals

• Horticulture

• White Goods

• Industrial Equipment

• Backlighting

Widespread use of LEDs also means the manufacturing and design of LEDs need to follow market innovations. The trend in electronics is to make items smaller, thus creating a need for smaller parts. Würth Elektronik has taken on the challenge of accommodating this challenge.

WL-SMCW and WL-SMCD

The Würth Elektronik WL-SMCW and WL-SMCD LED lines were developed to allow more flexibility for miniature and portable devices. These super flat LEDs are 40% thinner while still conforming to industry standard form and footprint. They have a typical height of 0.2 mm and offer a pleasant brightness. This line is part of our Chip LED offering or better known as PCB LEDs. The chip is enclosed by epoxy molding. With Chip LED packaging we can make the very small sizes (0603, 0805, 1206) and variety of heights.

Colors include:

• Super red

• Amber

• Red

• Yellow

• Bright green

• Green

• Blue

Gold Makes it Better

WL-SMCW LEDs use a gold plating for the contact pads. Most LEDs on the market use a tin plating. The contact pads are built in 3 layers: base, under-plating and finish layer. The base and under-plating layers are standard across the industry. Most manufacturers work with these same materials, but the difference is the finish layer.

Typically Tin (Sn) is used. It’s cheaper, which helps with costs, but the reliability and performance are not as good as gold or silver. Gold plating allows for better conductivity and lower resistance. Gold plating and silver plating has better solder-ability, conductibility, and no problems with oxidation

Quality and Consistency is in the Bin

When ordering large quantities of LEDs it’s important to make sure the product functions the same across all devices. Consistency is key, especially if you are producing high dollar items. One way to control that is to have consistency across bins.

Würth Elektronik LEDs are sorted with very narrow bin-ranges. Each LED reel has only 1 bin and we don’t mix bins, some call this a floating bin.
